Continental Model Directory

Philips Continental Receivers

The following table is the beginning of a comprehensive list of Continental (and other markets) Philips TV receivers produced during the period under consideration by this site.  Details of additional sets will be added as I discover them (Many thanks go to Maarten for providing much of this valuable information).  If you are aware of any sets that are missing from my list please contact me.

The first letter in model numbers up to approximately 1975 indicates the national organisation that specified the set as follows: X Netherlands, D Germany, G UK, S Sweden, V South Africa.  The first number is the screen diagonal in inches. The second letter is a K for colour. After approximately 1975 the letter C is used.

The letter B behind a chassis designation, means dual standard for Belgium 625 line only, PAL.

The number of presets can vary depending on stroke number (e.g. a X26K201 can have either 6, 8 or 12 presets), a survey of stroke numbers isn’t readily available. Stroke numbers indicate all kind of variations on the basic set; minor cosmetics, major cosmetics, major technical improvements, features, destination.

Australian en New-Zealand sets used a slightly different numbering scheme.

UPDATE from Maarten – 13 March 2012

Maarten has kindly provided some further information:

List of sets known to have the K11 chassis (made from approximately 1975-1978)

= means that models are most likely the same or very similar, but the styling can be

different in some cases. Information was amongst others taken from the Philips model

number survey 2003, 3122 785 14570.

A side note for those who have noticed the K10 chassis is missing from the line up. Rumour has, that this was a K9 variant with another tube, probably Trinitron, that didn’t make it beyond the prototype stage. Instead, Philips decided to use the 20AX tube and named the chassis K11. This chassis was designated K9i in some countries, most notable Germany. The differences between the K9 and K11 chassis were probably thought of as minor as the K11 chassis was basically an improved version of the K9 chassis with some minor (evolutionary) updates, another tube and as a result less complicated convergence circuits.

It seems very strange that only one German model is mentioned. Quite possibly the person who compiled the official Philips model number survey got confused by the K9i nomenclature. As a result of that, the D26C865 mentioned in the K9 overview might actually be a K11 set. Other German K11 sets probably exist.

UPDATE from Maarten – 26 March 2012

Maarten has kindly provided some further information:

List of sets known to have the K8/K8B/K8L (1970-1972), K8D (1970?-1973?) or K80 (1970?-1973) chassis (below).

The K8 was Philips last hybrid colour chassis.  It was the first to sport a 110 degrees delta CRT. More deflection power was needed and convergence circuitry was mostly active using transistors instead of passive as before.

It was made in 3 fundamentally different versions. The basic design was Dutch/Belgian as usual for the K series, and was designated K8, with variations K8B (for Belgian systems, 625 lines only) and K8L (tuner with separate push-buttons and a drawer instead of an integrated push-button/potmeter assembly). The K8L is never mentioned in the Model Number Survey but is marked as such on the schematic diagrams.

The German K8D used the same rather complex EHT cage as the K8 but the signal stages and controls were more advanced compared to the K8. It already used an IC in the colour decoder while touch controls and a wired remote were also available as options.

The Swedish K80 used a different, more modern EHT stage with a tripler and without the ballast triode.

UPDATE from Maarten – 16 April 2012

Maarten has kindly provided some further information:

List of sets known to have the K7, K7B, K7D, K7N, K7S, K70 chassis.

The K7 chassis is basically an improved successor of the K6 chassis. Sometime during production the 66cm delta tube was introduced to replace the 63cm version, indicated by the model number beginning with 26 or 66 instead of 25 or 65. K7S and K70 might be different names for the same chassis. D and S denote German or Swedish versions, respectively. B indicates a 625 line multisystem version for Belgium. All K7 variations are very similar in design.

UPDATE from Maarten – 24 April 2012

Maarten has kindly provided some further information:

List of sets known to have the K6, K6B, K6S chassis. The K6 chassis was the first continental colour chassis with a square 90 degrees tube. It was also the first colour chassis to go into mass production. Earlier K-chassis were either limited production runs or development types and had either round tubes or projection tubes.

Derived (more or less) multisystem chassis were the British G6 and probably the French TVC3.
