Australian Model Directory

During the period from 1974 to 1987 over one hundred different Australian built models were released. With such a large range of sets, the model directories have been grouped together in the following sub-categories:

– Australian built sets 1974-1979
– Australian built sets 1980-1983
– Australian built sets 1984-1987
– Imported sets 1980-1987 (Under Construction)

Where possible pictures of the different models have been included as well as a summary of the models details. A full list of the different models arranged by model number with the year they were released is at the end of this page. General information about the model and serial numbering systems used are discussed in detail below.

Model Numbering

Philips Australia used a completely different model numbering system compared to the European parent company. It is similar to an older Philips model coding system that was used for audio products.

The system used took the form of two numbers followed by two letters and then ending with three numbers. For example: 02KD654

So far, no information has been found that details how the model numbers were assigned, but after building up a complete list of models a pattern emerged allowing the code structure to be deduced as explained below.

Using the example 02KD654,
02 – The region code for Australian manufactured models
K – Colour TV with isolated chassis*
D – Model family (in this case, K9 chassis)
6  – Last digit of screen size in inches (i.e. 26 inch)
5  – Feature level of model (i.e. the “luxury” level, 1 is lowest, 0 is highest)
4  – The last digit of the year the model was introduced (i.e. 1974)

* Only two different letters were used for the first letter position. They are K or C. At this time the true meaning of the first letter is unknown but I believe it denotes either isolated chassis TV (K) or live chassis TV (C). However there are exceptions to this with the C models, as some are isolated chassis types.

The second letter ranged between A and S. Most models fell within the following main groups:
H – Remote control models
J – Push button tuning models
L – Touch tuning models
P – Push button tuning models
R – Remote control models
S – Remote control models with teletext

The screen size digit is fairly simple, 0 means 20″, 2 is 22 inch, 4 is 14 inch and 6 is 26 inch etc. The one exception is 5, this denotes 16 inch sets.

Below is an example of the model number & serial number labels used for all sets built in Australia.

Serial Numbers and how to date your Philips TV.

Not content with using their own model numbering system, the Australian models also used a different serial numbering system. Each model had its own serial number sequence. Serial numbers are always 4 or 5 digits long and I believe they start from 1000 for all models as I have not seen any below this figure.

Dating sets is much harder compared to the detailed production stickers that the European sets had. Until around 1976, inked stamps were applied to the plug-in modules that give an idea of production date within a few weeks. After 1976 these stamps were no longer applied and for a while the chassis had no identifying marks at all apart from the model/serial number label.
Around late 1977 or 1978 onwards, a new factory dating system was introduced. This consisted of a small paper label consisting of a date and in some cases, a second set of numbers probably indicating the production station or assembler.

The above labels are typical of the dating system used on K9A and early K11A chassis sets. The dates are only found on the labels on the plug-in modules. The left label gives a date of week 31 1975, while the right label has a date of week 9 1976.

These labels show the new dating system in use from around 1978. Once again they are usually only found on the plug-in modules. In this case they are hand written but normally, they are printed as shown in the next example. The date indicated is week 09 1979.

These two labels are typical of those in use during the 1980’s. The left one has a date of week 08 1981 while the one on the right is week 10 1981. These labels are from two different TV’s that are close in age. The significance of 5428 is not known but probably is part of a quality assurance process. Labels were applied to all major sub-assemblies in the set.

Some imported models were also sold in Australia before local production ended in 1987. These were usually sourced from Singapore and often had two versions of model numbers, the Australian model number and the “type” number that was the international model number. Serial numbers also followed international standards by starting with the factory code (in this case SV for Singapore) followed by the production date then the serial number of the chassis.
